Daily Prayer for Friday, June 19, 2026 entitled: “The lamp of the heart and the true treasure”

Lord Jesus, turn our eyes away from the false lights of the world, which promise a security that vanishes like fog in the sun. Teach us the art of storing up love, the only good that thieves cannot steal and rust cannot consume.

Our heart often dwells where our material concerns are. We ask You to free it from this ballast, so that it may fly freely toward You and rest in Your providence.

Grant us, good Father, a clear gaze and a pure intention in our daily actions. If our eye is bright, our whole existence will be flooded with Your splendid truth.

Guard us from the danger of inner blindness, that night of the soul which mistakes selfishness for freedom and hoarding for happiness. Be our only compass on the journey.

Fill our lives with Your divine light, so that we may become capable of sharing the goods of the earth with our poorest brothers and sisters, discovering the true joy of giving.

Amen.

EXPLANATION

In this passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus touches the nerve center of our freedom: our attachment to material goods and the deep intention of the heart. The Master uses two powerful images. The first is the treasure, which reveals where the center of gravity of our affections and energies lies. The second is the eye as the lamp of the body. In biblical language, the eye represents the way we judge reality. A “simple” and clear eye allows God’s light to penetrate and guide our choices, while a diseased eye, weighed down by greed, plunges man into the darkness of idolatry and anxiety.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

1. Do a brief examination of conscience on what occupies your thoughts and main anxieties during the day.
2. Choose a superfluous object you own and donate it to someone in real need.
3. Avoid complaining about economic or material matters for an entire day, practicing gratitude instead.
4. Dedicate ten minutes of silence to purify your intentions before starting your work.
5. Perform a hidden act of charity, without seeking recognition or praise from others.

1. If I look at my life right now, where is my greatest treasure located?
2. Is my gaze toward others and events clear, or is it clouded by envy and judgment?
3. What causes me more anxiety: losing a material possession or losing peace of heart?

5. In what way is my faith in Christ changing my relationship with money and possessions?
